It’s not uncommon for people to toy with the idea of making a career change. After all, we spend a considerable amount of

time at work, and we should be doing something that makes us feel fulfilled and successful. While we should each be striving to live our best lives, there is a lot to consider when it comes to making such a critical transition. Let’s go over some of the essential points that you should weigh as you move forward.

Complete a Self-Assessment

So often, we settle for a career because it’s convenient or earns X amount of money. While there’s nothing wrong with making sure your career meets your lifestyle goals, your self-assessment shouldn’t stop there. Consider what your passions are, your values, and the type of work environment that would make you excited to get out of bed every day. Essentially, you should be asking yourself, “What do I want?”

Prepare for the Transition

You need to make sure that you have the qualifications and experience to make a career change. There is a difference between what you want to do and what the working market will actually allow you to do. Keep in mind, just because you may not have all of the necessary requirements right now, you can start working toward it. This part of the process will simply let you know where you should begin. You may not be able to jump headfirst into a position just yet, but you could be taking steps toward the education and training that you need to obtain first.

Rely on Resources

It’s important to utilize as much helpful information as you possibly can. This can come in the form of attending conferences, networking, and asking the questions that you are most curious about.  Doing these things may help you get a position that you want, and will also give you helpful insight into a career from a variety of perspectives. The more you know, the more likely you’ll make the most informed decisions moving forward.

A career change is an exciting endeavor. However, it does require some organization, planning, and analyzing to ensure that you are making the best choice for your future.
